Moving is one of those jobs that feels enormous until you break it into steps. Start about eight weeks out and you’ll spread the work into small, manageable pieces instead of one exhausting weekend.

8 weeks before: set the plan

  • Pick your moving date and, if you can, keep a day or two of flexibility. Weekends and the end of the month book up fastest.
  • Request quotes from movers and compare what’s included: packing, stairs, heavy items, and how they charge (hourly or flat).
  • Start a moving folder (paper or digital) for quotes, receipts, lease or closing documents, and your inventory.
  • Walk through every room and decide what’s coming with you. Anything you won’t use in the new place is something you don’t have to pay to move.

6 weeks before: declutter and book

  • Book your movers once you’ve chosen. Confirm the date, arrival window, and who your contact is.
  • Sell, donate or recycle what you’re not taking. Schedule donation pickups now; they can book out weeks ahead.
  • Order packing supplies: sturdy boxes in a few sizes, packing tape, markers, and paper or bubble wrap for breakables.
  • Measure large furniture and the doorways, stairwells and elevators at your new home.

4 weeks before: start packing

  • Pack the rooms you use least first: guest rooms, storage, seasonal items and décor.
  • Label every box on two sides with the room it’s going to and a short description of what’s inside.
  • Change your address with the post office, your bank, employer and subscriptions.
  • Arrange utilities: schedule shut-off at the old place and connection at the new one, including internet.

2 weeks before: confirm the details

  • Confirm your move with your mover and share anything unusual: a piano, a third-floor walk-up, tight parking, or items that need crating.
  • Book elevators and loading docks if you’re in an apartment or condo. Many buildings require advance reservations.
  • Use up food in the freezer and pantry so there’s less to pack and throw away.
  • Refill prescriptions and set aside important documents to carry yourself.

Moving week

  • Pack an essentials box for the first night: toiletries, medications, phone chargers, a change of clothes, bedding, toilet paper, basic tools and snacks.
  • Defrost the freezer at least a day before if you’re moving it.
  • Disassemble furniture you’ve agreed to take apart, and bag and tape the hardware to the piece it belongs to.
  • Take photos of electronics’ wiring so reconnecting them is easy.

Moving day

  1. Be there when the crew arrives and walk them through the home.
  2. Point out anything fragile, high-value or not coming with you.
  3. Keep your essentials box, documents and valuables with you.
  4. Do a final walk-through: closets, cabinets, the attic and the garage.
  5. At the new home, direct boxes to the right rooms using your labels.

After the move

Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first so the house is livable, then take it one room at a time. Break down boxes as you go, and check your inventory against what arrived.

A good move is mostly planning. Do a little each week and moving day becomes the easy part.
